Wireless Dog Fence

A wireless dog fence is a system of fencing that electronically transmits sounds from the fence to an extensive network of sensors that can be placed around your home. There are models that use ultrasonic sound, infrared laser beacons, and even radio frequencies. Any of these systems will work on most brands of wireless dog fences. In order to make a decision about the best wireless dog fence for you, you first need to know how these fences work.

How Does a Wireless Fence Work?

Let’s start by talking about how a wireless fence works. Have a look at the diagram below while I explain:

  1. Your central transmitter sends out a radio signal that creates a circular boundary around your pet’s containment area, which is the Safe Zone of your yard.
  2. In the diagram above, the Safe Zone extends 90 feet in every direction, giving you a circular containment area of about 1/2 acre.
  3. Depending on the type of fence you buy, your Safe Zone can be adjusted anywhere from a minimum of about 10 ft. up to a maximum of almost 3 acres.
  4. Your dog wears a special transmitter collar, and as long as the collar is picking up the signal from the receiver, your pet can freely run around the Safe Zone without getting any kind of correction.
  5. The Correction Zone alerts the dog when they are approaching too closely to the boundary, so they know it’s time to turn around.
  6. If they ignore the warning beep and continue to move toward the hidden boundary, their static correction will be delivered. This kind of content is designed to make people uncomfortable, but it won’t hurt them.
  7. The static correction reminds the family that they are outside without permission, and it encourages them to return to their yard.

Why Are Wireless Dog Fences So Popular?

Wireless fences have become popular because they are easy to install, economical and effective:

Wireless fences are quick and easy to set up, you can have one up and running in less than an hour.

They’re very low maintenance. You’ll never have to worry about rusting your wires, or replacing them.

These treats are completely portable, meaning you can take them with you wherever you go and use them to create a clean, safe environment for your dog anytime.

When Is a Wireless Dog Fence Not Ideal?

Despite their fast, easy setup and portability, all wireless fences have limitations. In order for you to decide whether it’s the right choice for you, you’ll need to know about the limitations of each type of wireless fence.

Here are the main drawbacks of wireless dog fences:

  1. They can only give you a circular-shaped boundary. So if you have an odd or narrow shaped yard or if you have very close neighbors, the circular shape of the boundary may not be suitable for your needs.
  2. The boundary is not always clear. Sometimes you get great feedback and sometimes not so much.
  3. They don’t work well in yards with lots of trees or steep slopes. If a wireless fence is used in an area with lots of obstructions, such as walls and trees, the signal may not be able to reach the receiver collar properly.
  4. Metal siding on your house or metal shed on your property could cause problems with your fence.

Wireless fences have limited benefits in the areas of having a small fence area, not being able to see the animal and being limited to a particular area. Underground dog fences are also a great option for those looking to keep their pets in their back yard Although they’re more time-consuming and labor intensive, in-ground fences don’t have any of the limitations that wireless fences have. You can install the border if you’d like, the line will not be affected by metal and you can choose a rectangle shape for it.

So Is a Wireless Dog Fence Right For You?

Wireless dog fences are an excellent way to keep your dog safe and secure in your yard. Wireless fences are very handy for keeping your pets in, especially when you are away from home. That means you can take your fence with you no matter where you travel and in less than 30 minutes you can have a safe place to contain your furry friend, whether you’re at the beach, the cabin or the cabin a campground or visiting friends and relatives.

That kind of convenience and peace-of-mind is hard to beat!
